The name "North Pole" is often applied to the entire area covered by its zip code, 99705. Although the true North Pole has no land, many travelers have discovered this place as an ideal way to finally visit Santa's home. This revelation has made this small Alaskan town a must-visit during the holidays, and has spurred the town to create more and more Santa-themed attractions. Some of the largest theme park companies in the country have proposed many elaborate ideas that never materialized.

North Pole Christmas-themed streets include Santa Claus Lane, St. Nicholas Drive, Snowman Lane and Kris Kringle Drive. The city also has an all-female Roller Derby league, the North Pole Babes in Toyland (NPBT), whose female athletes have skating names after Christmas and/or the North Pole. "We have attendants, reviewers and testers here," said Amanda Johnson, Beacon's vice president of health and education services. "So people receive them first to receive information about whether they are guests of the state of Alaska, residents or [part of] critical infrastructure."

Greeters help direct people to the row they are supposed to go to. After going online, examiners review their statement page and discuss which option they want for quarantine or testing.

"Then if they've decided to take the test, they go on to sign up for that test and then go on to the actual test," Johnson said.

The whole process from the first guest to the last takes about 40 minutes. The mandate came into effect on June 6. However, some travelers did not expect this.

"I didn't really realize it was going to be like that, you have a lot of paperwork and you're trying to figure out what to do, I mean. And then you get in long lines," said Katrina Bishop, who is returning to the state from college. But he said it was just a minor inconvenience: "It was good, I don't know, I don't know how we could have done it better. I think you line up and that's kind of it. But I think it's just good."

The airport has some tips for getting through the lines faster. "The preference and suggestion is to get the testing done before you come to the state of Alaska. But there is an option to get it done here," said Melissa Stepovich, the airport's marketing and communications manager. It also encourages people to make sure their paperwork is complete before they step off the plane.

FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska - Fort Wainwright has partnered with several community organizations to offer weekly informational and off-duty tours to all recruits. This effort is designed to share information with new Soldiers and their families about the wealth of opportunities and resources in the greater Fairbanks area. Explore Fairbanks, the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the Fairbanks City Government and Pioneer Park have all contributed significantly to the new travel program.

Visits began in March, although the program was temporarily suspended due to the pandemic. The visits continued on July 10 and now take place every Friday. Safety measures include stipulations that all participants wear masks during the tour, regularly use hand sanitizer, and maintain physical distance from anyone outside of their immediate family.

"Explore Fairbanks became involved as we expanded our outreach program with our armed neighbors throughout the county. We hosted Fairbanks information tables already at spouse orientations and induction seminars. Things really started to take off when Explore Fairbanks' president and Executive director Deb Hickok brought up the topic of orientation visits at a local FNSB [Fairbanks North Star Borough] military-civilian meeting with a representative from the US Alaska Garrison. After that, research meetings were held and the program was developed," said Charity Gadapee, Director of Visitor Services and partnership development for Explore Fairbanks.

Tours begin with interested soldiers and family members boarding a military bus parked at the garrison headquarters. The first stop on the tour is the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center, where a member of the Explore Fairbanks team greets them and gives them a brief introduction to how the tour will go. After screening, they are welcomed to Fairbanks by a local elected official or other prominent community member. Fairbanks Mayor Jim Matherly spoke several times.

"Our members are a very important part of our community and I think it is imperative that we give them a warm welcome and make them feel at home here. As mayor, I feel very privileged every time I have the opportunity to welcome them on behalf of all Fairbanks residents," said Matherly.

Participants then have approximately 30 minutes to explore the museum, which highlights Alaska Native culture and life in the interior of Alaska. They can also see stands of free pamphlets and brochures about statewide recreation opportunities from the Alaska Public Lands Information Center and talk to a National Park Service representative. We encourage them to return to the Center on their own to explore at length and take advantage of all the resources it has to offer.

An Explore Fairbanks team member serves as a tour guide throughout the three-hour tour and monitors the schedule each morning and lets them know when it's time to get back on the bus.

The next stop on the tour is Pioneer Park, a 44-acre historic theme park that offers a walk through local history and recreational, shopping and dining options. Donnie Hayes, the park manager, often personally greets each group of newly arrived visitors, welcoming them and describing what the park has to offer.
