One of the greatest advances in firearms has been the repeating firearm. The revolver was the first successful repeating pistol and to this day the basic design remains the same. A rotating cylinder with a handle on the underside is inserted into the frame. This cylinder has holes drilled into it, into which cartridges or cartridges are inserted. This cylinder rotates on a pivot in the center to align each hole in the cylinder in turn with the barrel and firing mechanism.

The oldest recorded revolver is an 8-shot, hand-turned, flintlock revolver made in 1597. It belonged to Officer Georg von Reichwein of Hesse, Germany. It's a very interesting piece of weapon construction, but it didn't catch on.
Girl Talk: Which Are The Best Guns For Women?
The modern design revolver has been around since 1830 when Sam Colt was bored crossing the ocean in a slow boat and carved a wooden model of the revolver. He is said to have invented the modern revolver with this model. By 1836, it was producing the Colt Patterson, named for Patterson, NJ, where it manufactured pistols. A nice feature of this gun was that the trigger was hidden inside the frame until the gun was cocked.
Colt made a big mistake when he rejected the idea of one of his gunsmiths, Rollin White. White came up with the idea of a "bored" revolver cylinder to allow the use of metal cartridges in handguns. After Colt fired White for daring to suggest improvements to his revolver design, White took his idea to Smith & Wesson. They patented his invention and prevented Colt from making cartridge guns for nearly 20 years.
It was this concept—cylinders drilled to accommodate pre-loaded cartridges—that ushered the revolver into what we think of as modern design. Sure, there have been many improvements and modifications, but if you put a modern revolver next to a late 19th century revolver, you can easily tell that they are the same species.
The Smith and Wesson Model 1 was the first revolver to use self-contained cartridges. Later, in 1873, after the patent expired, Colt introduced the single-action army pistol, perhaps the most famous revolver in history. It is the weapon that inspired the epitaph; “God made men, Colonel Colt made them equal.

The Colt Single Action Army, along with the Colt .45 centerfire cartridge, cemented America's love affair with revolvers that continues to this day, nearly 200 years after Colt carved the prototype.
Here's a look at what I consider to be some of the best revolvers for the outdoorsman and woman. Although primarily designed for the outdoorsman, some of these rifles can even be considered the best concealed carry revolvers. Of course, some of them are ideal for protection against lions, tigers and bears in the desert. Many of them work quite well for bipedal threats as well. For example, I carry a S&W J-Frame in .357 everywhere I go, which could be woodcock hunting or it could be grocery shopping for dinner. The shorter barreled Model 19 S&W was the weapon of choice for many law enforcement agencies and civilians who carried it concealed for many years. Today, in the 4-inch version offered by S&W, it's still a great carry option.
The .454 Casull won that title, and when Freedom Arms in Wyoming started making revolvers, I had to have one. It took a while because Freedom Arms revolvers are not cheap. But it's worth every penny. They are made with the precision of a Swiss watch and the power of an Abrams tank.
The first Freedom Arms Model 83 came with a standard 7.5-inch barrel. I mounted a Leupold scope on it with a JD Jones T'SOB mount and took it into the woods. I've lost count of the creatures I've shot with that Model 83. Deer, bear, hog and lots of smaller game. I have done a lot of shooting at the range and practice and yet the gun is as tight as the day I got it 33 years ago.
Wild Bill Hickock's Revolver Expected To Fetch $300,000 At Auction
He once hit a black bear so hard that my friend Bill Ingalls shook his head and said, "That's the deadest damn bear I've ever seen." Bill has cared for bear dogs for decades and has seen many dead bears.
While deer hunting in south Alabama. One morning a deer killed me and another hunter out of the field. The two bloodstains could not have been more different. As I was helping another hunter follow a narrow blood trail that had frustrated him for hours, it crossed my deer's.
"All I could think about was Crocodile Dundee and his knife," she said. "I actually shouted out loud, 'So this is a bloody trail!'
I have another one now. Another 5-inch barrel, .454 that Ken Kelly of Mag-na-Port rigged up for me as a carry gun in bear country, as well as Model 83 revolvers chambered in .50 AE and FA proprietary .50 Wyoming Express, the cartridge I was looking for would T -Rex, if they ever solve this cloning thing. I'm sure no one will argue when I say that the Freedom Arms Model 83 is the best single action revolver ever made. If you want a hunting revolver that you can pass down to your children, get a Freedom Arms.
Best Concealed Carry Revolvers For Personal Defense (2022)
The introduction of the .357 Magnum in 1935 was significant in that it was the first revolver cartridge truly suitable for hunting. Elmer Keith, of course, ran the .45 Colt and the .44 Special, but neither was suitable for big game with factory loaded ammo.
The .357 appeared in the large-frame pistol that later became the Model 27. It was a beautiful piece of firearms art. By the way, I once had the opportunity to buy one for a few peanuts. But I had a new job, a new home and a new son. I didn't have any peanuts. This is the weapon that haunts my dreams. I wish I could go back in time and get the money together to buy that revolver.
The large frame, called an N-frame, is a somewhat heavy .357 pistol. So when S&W introduced a smaller and lighter K-frame in .357 in 1957 and called it the Model 19, things changed.
This weapon was intended for police officers and was also a weapon for hunters and outdoorsmen. It had to be brought. All the experts said it would fall apart with a lot of use, but it really didn't. Most men outside never shot that much anyway. Not even the cops.
The Best Revolvers For Women
I used mine, it's a six inch barrel with a Partridge style front sight. I used it for PPC competitions with wadcutters caliber .38 Special and hunting with full bullets. I recently met an old shooting buddy from the seventies and he asked me about the gun, "You always played with that thing, do you still have it?"
I do and it's tuned to perfection. For many years I wore it whenever I was in the woods. With that pistol and hand-loaded ammo, I took every creature I could shoot in my home state of Vermont except bobcat and black bear.
I truly believe that cartridges and pistols are kindred spirits. For example, the .30-30 and the Model 94 Winchester. They are symbiotic and one would not survive without the other. They are perfect. For the .357 Magnum, the Model 19 is “the one”. S&W stupidly dropped it for a while, but luckily they got the hang of it and it's back in the catalog.
The year is 1955, and Smith & Wesson and Remington are feverishly working under cover of secrecy to develop the Model 29 revolver and .44 Magnum cartridge. I guess they weren't so good at the "stealth" part because someone found some spent casings in the trash and they headed over to Bill Ruger's desk. Ruger called all his friends at Remington to ask about the cartridge, but they wouldn't tell him anything.
Is The Walther P22 The Best .22 Pistol For Women?
In typical Bill Ruger fashion, he said "the hell with them" and built a new .44 Magnum Blackhawk by reverse engineering the shells. Ruger introduced its pistol in 1956 before S&W and the Model 29.
The .44 Magnum Blackhawk remained in production until 1959 when it evolved into the Super Blackhawk. This more robust gun remains one of the best hunting guns ever made. The Model 29 S&W, the gun most associated with the introduction of the .44 Magnum, was a great gun, but it had some flaws. That it would fall apart if too many shots were fired was one. This came to light when filming began on the Handgun Metallic Silhouette in the late 1970s. Smith & Wesson refused to admit there was a problem for years, and it didn't take long for Rugers to dominate the revolver class.
