From 5 p.m. Monday until 6 am. on Aug. 24, the main runway will be closed as crews install a new asphalt surface, according to Meridian Airport Authority President Tom Williams.
Williams said the current track, the longest public track in Mississippi, has reached 20 years of life. The track was last renovated in 1999-2000, he said.
The project, which is funded by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Air National Guard, costs approximately $4.9 million.

Williams said the last time the runway was repaired, the work was completed at night, allowing the airport to open during the day. However, that process was inefficient, both for the airport and the contractor.
The Air National Guard will be temporarily deployed during the shutdown. However, the airport will continue to serve private jets and small military aircraft, Williams said.
During the project, contractors will install a compressive rock layer under the pavement to prevent cracking of the road and cover the runway. Over time, crews will repair roads and install permanent runway markings, but that work will be completed at night and will not affect commercial flights.
