Its founder Frank DeSomma, who sadly passed away a few days ago, was a former aerospace engineer and sports shooter who started building ARs in his own garage, initially with the help of his son and grandson. DeSomma set out to create a near-fireproof rifle with an AR platform that would not suffer from the typical problems of direct impact systems, especially in environments where sand and dust were present.

The weak point of the direct impact system is the carbon residue that forms and accumulates on the screw, which can cause feeding problems and jams in the long term.
Frank DeSomma solved all this by creating a system where gases push an adjustable short stroke piston, producing the necessary impulse to move the bolt back, while also avoiding carbon buildup on the bolt carrier.
The safety lever, magazine release and bolt release are located on both sides of the receiver. The grip is Magpul MOE.

The POF 415 Generation 3, the subject of our tests, is chambered in .223 Remington. In the 14.5”/37 cm tube version, it weighs 3200 grams. The Timney rifle has a single-stage, non-adjustable trigger made of A2 steel with a pull weight of 2000 grams. The safety, magazine release and bolt release levers are reciprocal. The heavy barrel POF 415 is grooved, made of chrome-moly steel with a hardness of 70 HRC. The factory has a glass breaker three-chamber compensator/brake, but it was replaced in our test sample with a Surefire MB556 compensator.
The grip has been replaced by a Magpul MOE grip, while the factory telescopic stock is a CTR model, also from an American accessory manufacturer.
To complete the range of accessories, the owner installed a Vortek Razor 1-6X Gen sight on the POF 415. 2 with a Tactical-MIL reticle on quick release mounts.
The Most Accurate Ar15 Out Of The Box
The POF 415 is a solid rifle with some interesting solutions, even if invisible: the generous grip provides support on all four sides for as many Picatinny rails and hides a finned heat shield for better heat dissipation - 17 times more than traditional AR, where the exhaust pressure of gases is greater.
The bolt carrier has a self-lubricating NP3 finish, as does the pin, while the bolt head, extractor and firing pin are chrome plated.
When configured this way, the rifle weighs about 11 lb/5 kg: not exactly a twig. For those who practice shooting with static support there is no problem. For those who want to practice more dynamically, good physical preparation is recommended, because the rifle is strong and quite heavy due to the heavy barrel and especially the grip. If you add an extra 1.5 lb/700 grams of optics, when you do mag changes, conversions and manipulations, all this weight is felt. Of course, nothing inhuman - especially if you take short steps. On the other hand, if you carry a rifle in a sling for several hours and alternate different steps, then you feel tired. Thanks to its weight and compensator, the POF 415 has no nose rise. The recoil is light and feels like you are shooting a much lighter caliber than the already soft .223 Remington. Instead, the sound of the shot is deafening, either because of the piston system or because you still have a muzzle velocity of about 2950 feet per second, unless you have excellent hearing protection systems, you'll be going home with a bit of tinnitus. . All in all, the POF 415 is a very special black rifle that certainly offers advantages to competitive shooters for whom above-average weight is not a problem.
