It is one of several bases that comprise Naval Air Station Key West.

Trumbo Point was an artificial addition to the island of Key West. It was built around 1912 to house a seaport for the Florida East Coast Railroad and was the railroad's overseas terminus. Construction was done by the American Trumbo Dredging Company, with Howard Trumbo as the project's lead engineer.

USA The Navy purchased Trumbo Point from the Florida East Coast Railway in 1917. The base was originally a Navy seaplane base and was later used by helicopters. Taxi ramps can still be lowered into the water on the north side of the large pink concrete platform where the hangars once stood.

Today, Trumbo Point is used primarily for military housing and is the site of the former Bachelor Officers Quarters (BOQ), now known as the Navy Gateway Inns & Suites. NGIS is the tallest building on the island of Key West, a three-wing building. Trumbo Point also contains a restaurant, bar and lounge, vacation homes for active and retired military, a swimming pool and a water park.

The base can be accessed through the Trumbo Gate from the intersection of Palm Avue and Peary Court Road in the civilian sector.

The northernmost part of Fleming Sound (accessible only from Trumbo) is home to the John F. Knedy Special Warfare School's Submarine Warfare School, the US Army's Special Operations Submarine School. On a recent dive trip to the Florida Keys, my dive buddy Bill and I used much of our "surface time" to explore Key West's NAS Trumbo Point Annex // Navy Getaways MWR Accommodations - Key West Accommodation to Navy Base Hotel, Townhomes and Trailers.

With hotel rates in Key West ranging from $250 a night to $950 a night, at $75 these RVs that sleep four are an absolute bargain, so I'll show you first. Initially, when Bill kept talking about the "Trumbo Point trailers," I wasn't too excited. Well, I can tell you that I have completely changed my mind about them.

They are impeccably clean, light and airy inside and the best deal for 100 miles around, not to mention you are on the base so it's ultra safe and the base is a short distance and bike to downtown, dive and Key. The Main Road of the West. My latest and exciting discovery of how wonderful this hosting option is comes at the end of the article, so read on!

I found some great options. You must be current or former military, or traveling with someone who fits those categories; so share this and travel with a friend who qualifies if you don't. Unfortunately, the Key West facility, as well as the other MWR properties, is only for active duty and retired military and not for veterans.

Trumbo Point Facilities

Update as of January 5, 2020! A member of the NAS Jax Skin and Scuba Dive Club just sent me this update: "The VA contacted me and it appears that they (or DOD) have loosened the rules on who can use facilities that were only available to retirees in the past to include vets with service-connected disabilities." After comparing off-base and on-base hotels, we've determined some of the top benefits of staying on-base. For divers, the number one pro to staying on base is safety. You don't have to lug all your SCUBA gear to your hotel room. It's safe in the car. Also, you walk safely. This is a great benefit!

No road noise from the ever-closer freeway, no city noises from bustling businesses here - just peace and quiet, and it even applies! This is another great benefit.

The few downsides would be not having access to a nice pool or gym, but there are several pool and workout options available somewhere on base, free of charge, all of which are listed below, as well as various benefits and privileges you'll find at most hotels. At the end of this article, I'll include special prices for everything from local attractions to land and water activities; you will be surprised at the reduced rates!

Another disadvantage can be not meeting as many locals as you would off base and experiencing the culture of an area first hand. However, if you simply rest your head on the base pillow; the rest of the day is free to experience the color, weather and people of the area.

The best deal in all of Key West are these immaculate trailers. At first glance, she seemed small, hot and unglamorous. I thought they were abandoned!

However, we borrowed a key and went to have a look. Not only are they flawless, they are also absolutely immaculate inside. They are painted all white, so they look very bright inside. The outside is a bit loose so we thought about bringing a tent and chairs for some shade and outdoor options.

Although the interior is not luxurious, it has all the essentials. There are two bedrooms with queen beds. A shared bathroom is at one end of the trailer. In between, there is a living room/sitting area, a dining area, an office area and a fully equipped kitchen. It's not much, but it's all you need for a great visit to Key West.

The bedrooms are at opposite ends of the trailer so you will have the most privacy geographically possible. Each bedroom has a large area to store clothes. There are shelves so everything is easily accessible and easy to see and find.

Rates are $75 per night. You can't find a hotel room that sleeps two for less than $250 a night in Key West, and they sleep four; with free parking!

I was very surprised that all the paper products were included - paper towels, toilet paper and even tissues! There is a TV and also Wi-Fi.

The all-white interior colors and lack of clutter keep trailer interiors from feeling small or cluttered.

The living room is very spartan: there is a coffee table, a three-seater sofa and a chair. There is a flat screen TV if this is important to you while on vacation.

There is also a small desk and that chair can be moved to the dining room table if needed. We probably set up a laptop there to download dives from our dive computers and camera photos.

Well, it fits four or five or even six if you moved the table away from the wall. It's not much to look at, but it's meant to rest your plate while you eat and share stories of your daily air-conditioned adventures.

Due to our vacation style of enjoying the best of the best dinner options, from the supermarket, we are always interested in knowing what is in the kitchen area to know what else to bring.
